11:34, 2010-May-18 .. 0 comments .. Link

The Lady Chargers are certainly riding the crest of a soccer wave of glory Tiffany Bracelets the moment.

Crest is entering unknown territory in the sport: the Lady Chargers will be playing for the first time ever in the third round of the state soccer playoffs early next week. That came as result of defeating Fred T. Foard Friday night, 3-2, at Sid Bryson Stadium in a 3A second-round encounter.

Crest, now 11-7-3 on the year, will take on the Saint Stephens/Asheville winner possibly as early as Tuesday.

The Crest girls, who had upset Tuscola on the road in the opening round, Tiffany Pendants trailed in this one. Tied 1-1 at the half -- and forced to play without team captain Amy Burch due to an injury -- the Lady Chargers were spurred on by enthusiastic crowd and were able to punch two goals in and hold on for the win.

"I'm very proud of them, we beat a real good team," Crest coach Zachary Wortman said. "We had to make some adjustments at the half with our captain (Burch), who plays 80 minutes a game, out of there. We challenged them to step up and find a leader and they answered it."

Kaitlyn Washburn scored off a Brayden Pruitt assist with 21:17 remaining to give Crest the lead for good at 2-1. Pruitt then headed a ball into the net with 14:25 to go for a 3-1 advantage, thanks to Jesse Heavner's assist.

Foard (14-8), got the second goal of the night from all-region player Erica Detweiler with 7:20 to go for a 3-2 score, but Crest stayed on the attack and was able to wipe out the clock the rest of the way.

"We did focus on No. 5 (Detweiler)," Wortman said. "Kelsey Stroud did an excellent job Tiffany Earrings her."

Crest -- the third-seeded squad out of the Big South Conference -- had grabbed a 1-0 lead only four minutes into the game when Chelsea Hamrick converted a shot after a rebound from the post.

Haley Johnson was in goal for the win for the Lady Chargers.

First lady touts commonwealth's wines

11:32, 2010-May-18 .. 0 comments .. Link

May 15--When it comes to the question of color, Virginia's first lady quibbles not.

"Red, definitely red," said Maureen McDonnell, wife of Gov. Bob McDonnell, as she Tiffany Bangles in the great room of White Hall Vineyards, a small glass of viognier -- a crisp, fruity white wine -- in her hand.

"I've always preferred red wine and even more so when I learned about the natural chemicals -- resveratrol -- that help fight disease and keep your heart healthy."

If she loves red wine, why was she sipping a white?

"Viognier is a wonderful wine and Virginia viogniers are being recognized around the world," said Lisa Champ, sales manager for White Hall. "It's also known as the white wine for people who prefer red."

McDonnell joined Todd Schneider, chef at the Governor's Mansion, Todd Haymore, state secretary for agriculture and forestry and assorted business leaders, wine industry officials and news reporters on a Friday bus tour of Central Virginia wineries. The entourage stopped at Jefferson Vineyards and Veritas Vineyards before finishing up at White Hall.

The trip was part of McDonnell's First Lady's Initiatives Team Effort program that Tiffany Key Rings on calling attention to preventive health and wellness programs, economic development and opportunity for military families and for women.

"When Bob was inaugurated I knew that I wanted to help Virginia businesses receive national and global attention," she said. "I also wanted to find ways to let Virginians know of the great products within their own state."

Friday's tour was to call attention to the state's award-winning wine industry and local products, McDonnell said.

"For some time we lived in California and we really enjoyed the wines out there," she said. "When we came back to Virginia, we found the wine industry just beginning and some good wines being made. Now there are so many world-class wines produced in the state that we want others to hear about them."

McDonnell said studies showing that resveratrol helps fight cancer and heart disease made the trip fit in with her hopes of promoting a healthy lifestyle, as well.

"What could be better than something that tastes good being good for you?" she asked.

For Schneider, the trip was a chance to learn more about vintners' products and ways to discount tiffany Virginia wines with locally grown food.

"We try to serve local foods with local wines, and I like to find new combinations," he said. "We try a lot of new things."

Tony Champ, who owns White Hall Vineyards with his wife, Edie, said he appreciated the first lady and crew dropping by.

"What it shows me is that this administration is serious about helping local industry," Champ said. "It would be great to call more local attention to Virginia's wines. In California, people tend to drink more California wines but we don't seem to do the same in Virginia. Efforts like this could help change that."

Weight-Loss Expert and Author Sanford Siegal

06:01, 2010-Mar-31 .. 0 comments .. Link

Renowned physician, author and weight-loss expert Dr. Sanford Siegal, a practicing physician in South Florida best known as the creator of the popular Dr. Siegal's COOKIE DIET(R) weight-loss system and foods, confirmed today that he has offered Donna Simpson of Old Bridge, New Jersey, $50,000 if she'll tiffany sale her much-publicized quest to reach a weight of 1,000 pounds and, instead, achieve a healthful weight. Dr. Siegal made his offer in a letter that was delivered to Simpson's home yesterday morning.

"When I first heard about Donna Simpson's plan to reach a weight of 1,000 pounds I thought it was a joke. Then I read the news reports and realized she was serious. I was appalled," said Dr. Siegal. "I understand that people are encouraging this woman on Twitter and other social media sites, and that some food companies may even be jumping on the bandwagon. In my opinion, anyone who encourages this dangerous stunt is essentially guilty of assisted suicide."

In his letter to Simpson, Dr. Siegal warned her of the health consequences that he says she is certain to face if she doesn't reverse course soon:

"Since nothing I've read about you in the media suggests that you're suicidal, I have to conclude that you aren't intentionally trying to kill yourself and are doing so unknowingly. I must assume that you simply don't appreciate the severity--and certainty--of the premature death you face and the ghastly medical problems that will precede it."

In particular, Dr. Siegal warned Simpson about the horrors of diabetes which, he said, she is virtually certain to develop if she hasn't already:

"But, mercifully, you are not likely to reach your goal. Your early success will eventually work against you. As your diabetes becomes more severe and you become less mobile (probably bedridden), there's a good chance that one or both of your legs will be amputated. This will reduce your weight significantly. Of course, your legs will not be much use to you since you probably won't be able to walk anyway, with or without them. You may not even miss your legs since you won't be able to see them as a result of the blindness that often accompanies diabetes. But you may still feel pain in them even after they're gone. That often happens after amputation; it's called 'phantom pain'."

Dr. Siegal explained in his letter that, although he hopes to stop Simpson from "eating herself to death," his tiffany rings sale motivation in making his offer is to reverse the damage that may have been done to children and impressionable teenagers who he says have been sent a dangerous message by Simpson's actions and the publicity they have received.

"As I've said, I've devoted my life to educating the world about the perils of obesity and to helping people get thin. Many others, including the current First Lady, are also involved in this struggle. Your mission--and the publicity it has generated and will continue to generate--undermine our efforts and send a very bad message. While I sincerely want to save you from eating yourself to death, it is the population as a whole--especially children and impressionable teenagers--that I hope to help by convincing you to stop setting a terrible example and start being a good role model."

Dr. Siegal's offer to Simpson provides for specific payments to be made as she achieves certain milestones. If she accepts, the first $10,000 will be paid upon her (1) ending her weight-gain diet and agreeing not to resume it in the future, (2) beginning a weight-loss diet of her choosing under a doctor's supervision, and (3) agreeing to speak to the media about her unequivocal decision to end her self-destructive behavior and pursue a healthful weight.

"The first $10,000 would come very quickly as it doesn't require her to lose weight, just to stop trying to gain weight," explained Dr. Siegal. "The other $40,000 will be paid as she reaches certain weight milestones."

Simpson, who reportedly weighs 600 pounds, would receive $10,000 for every 100 pounds she loses until she reaches 200 pounds.

"Once she hits 200 pounds, I think she'll have all the motivation she'll need to lose the rest," said Dr. tiffany bracelets sale. "By that point she'll look and feel so much better."

Dr. Siegal's offer allows Simpson to choose any weight-loss approach as long as it is approved and supervised by a doctor and doesn't involve surgery:

"As for how you lose the weight, that's up to you. I don't care which method of weight loss you choose as long as it doesn't involve surgery (let's not try to correct one ill-advised action with another) and is approved by your doctor. If you wish to follow Dr. Siegal's COOKIE DIET, which has worked very well for generations of dieters, I'll provide for free the cookies and shake mixes that will keep your hunger in check as you follow a reduced-calorie diet. Also at your option, I'll recommend a physician in New York City who uses Dr. Siegal's COOKIE DIET in his practice and who I believe would treat you at no cost."

Dr. Sanford Siegal is a practicing physician, author, and weight-loss pioneer whose South Florida medical practice, Siegal Medical Group, has treated more than 500,000 overweight patients. Although he has received recognition for his books on topics including high fiber diets, hunger control, and hypothyroidism, he is best known as the Cookie Doctor(R) behind the internationally popular Dr. Siegal's COOKIE DIET(R) (www.CookieDiet.com) weight-loss approach and foods.

WOMEN with sickle cell disease will be trained and counselled to help them tiffany pendants sale their mark in the workplace.

The initiative aims to transform the lives of female sufferers and is being spearheaded by the Bahrain Society for Sickle Cell Anaemia Patient Care.

Society chairman Zakareya Ebrahim Alkadhem said the society had started with women because their futures were most affected by the disease.

"Some girls end up divorced because the disease puts a strain on the family, so we will give them skills and help them solve their problems," he told the GDN.

"There is an idea that no-one will look at or marry a woman with sickle cell disease and she doesn't have any future and this will affect her health. We want to build women's confidence and skills and show them that they can be independent from men."

The students will take a one-year UK BTEC diploma in a subject of their choice, such as tiffany earrings sale, computing, marketing, administration or graphic design.

Along with the training the women will have access to counselling at the BTI that will help them solve any personal problems they could be facing.

In addition, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI-MUB) will give the women medical counselling to help them change their lifestyles and reduce the number of days they spend in hospital and on medication.

"We need to motivate these patients and change their lifestyle, so that instead of only going to the hospital they can study and work," said Mr Alkadhem.

"We want to show these patients that they deserve more. We want this training to continue every year, so we instigate further fundraising activities.

"We are also looking at helping them set up their own micro-businesses."

There are currently 18,000 men and women in Bahrain with sickle cell disease, as well as 65,000 carriers.

Sickle cell disease is inherited from parents who are both carriers. The disease causes episodes of pain, increased susceptibility to infections and psychological problems.

People who inherit the sickle cell gene from one parent will not have the disease, but can pass the gene on to their children.

Bahrain has had an active programme for the prevention of sickle cell disease for decades and pre-marital screening has been mandatory for all Bahrainis since 2005.

Efforts by the Health Ministry to reduce the number of children being born with the tiffany necklaces sale have been successful.

In 2008, 0.7 of every 100 live births had sickle cell disease, but the figure dropped to 0.5 last year.

Donations in support of the training programme can be made at the BTI, in Isa Town.

Woman pleads guilty to drug charge in deal

10:35, 2010-Mar-25 .. 0 comments .. Link

Amanda Lea Johnson sighed as she walked through a small tiffany rings door after she pleaded guilty to a drug offense Monday morning.

The 28-year-old who once was charged for serious drug offenses with her boyfriend, pleaded guilty to sponsoring a gathering where controlled substances were used.

"It's my house," she told District Court Judge Cynthia Danielson. "I know I'm responsible for it."

In exchange for the guilty plea, Des Moines County prosecutors tiffany bracelets a possession charge.

In addition, prosecutors promised not to refile charges of manufacturing meth and two counts of possession of meth precursors against the woman.

Also as part of the plea agreement, prosecutors will not make any penalty recommendation during Johnson's sentencing May 3. She is expected to ask for a suspended sentence.

The maximum she could receive for the offense is five years in prison.

Meanwhile, the case against her co-defendant, Jeremiah Jon Bass, who is charged with sponsoring a gathering where controlled substances are used, manufacture of meth and two counts of possession of meth precursors, will go to trial May 11, with a pretrial conference April 19.

But his case may reach a plea agreement.

Attorneys said there is a possibility Bass' case will be referred to the drug court, a program operated by the 8th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services.

The drug court, based in Fort Madison, functions within the tiffany cufflinks district court system to address non-violent drug-related cases. Offenders are selected based on the severity of the crime and the potential for rehabilitation.

If he is not admitted to the program and is convicted, Bass faces more than 35 years in prison.

During the investigation, Southeast Iowa Narcotics Task Force agents said they collected information about possible illegal activities being conducted at a rented home at 704 S. Sixth St. that Bass and Johnson shared.

On Sept. 29, task force agents with operatives from the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, officers from the Burlington Police Department and deputies from the Des Moines County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at the location.

During a search of the basement, agents found an HCL generator and tiffanys jars containing bluish liquid.

Court papers indicate that in the kitchen area, officers seized acetone, fuel line antifreeze and liquid lightning beneath the sink. There also were camping fuels, new and used coffee filters, tubing, lithium batteries, packaging materials and three empty boxes of pseudoephedrine tablets in the kitchen area.

Several other materials agents said are used to manufacturing meth were found throughout the home as well as in the garage.

Can grown women get away with biker boots and leather trousers

06:58, 2010-Mar-22 .. 0 comments .. Link

Certain things have a way of making you feel your age: the realisation that the first lady is your peer, the Return To Tiffany that several people on the Forbes rich list are younger than you, and biopics made about rock stars whom you remember from when they actually were rock stars.

Joan Jett, who reappeared on the pop culture radar last week thanks to the opening of The Runaways , was more of an icon of mine from her "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" Blackhearts days of 1982 than from the later "Cherry Bomb" era in the film, but still - the shag haircut, dark eye make-up, and leather is inked indelibly into my fashion past. So much so that when I first moved to London I embarrassed myself by (mistakenly) getting a Joan Jett haircut and crying to the stylist in horror, "But you've given me a shag!" Ahem.

In truth, it's never been a look I have sought to emulate; more one that I admired from afar (the closest I came to punk as a teenager were skull earrings and black nail polish).

Which is why, earlier this month, I was surprised to find myself during the Paris fashion shows Tiffany 1837 at the leather leggings on Gareth Pugh's catwalk and the tunics at Rick Owens' show. I was equally surprised to experience a desire, after viewing Ann Demeulemeester's collection of warrior queen-wear, to run out and buy some bias-cut floor-length noir-ish skirts. And I consciously had to force myself to stop fondling the leather high-tops with embossed skulls at Lucien Pellat-Finet's showroom. The combination of The Runaways and a tougher global economy producing tougher fashion means the Jett aesthetic is returning to the high street.

But then, as The Runaways demonstrates quite graphically, some things that are appealing are not very good for you (even if you haven't seen the film, you can guess what these are). The question is whether or not punk-inspired fashion falls into this category - at least for the happily settled, professional, grown-up, family woman.

Is the desire for leather leggings and motorcycle boots in middle age a sign of latent mid-life crisis that will be glaringly obvious to everyone, or a natural reaction to the turn of the style cycle? There's a fine line between being embarrassed and being cool. But where, exactly, does it lie?

I ask Pellat-Finet, who says: "You know, I get people who come in who love the skulls, and they are everywhere between 16 and 60. It's really nothing to do with age."

Certainly, Rick Owens and everyone who works with him - many of them well into their Tiffany Notes - wear the full look with impunity. There are public figures, too, who have performed dramatic sartorial about-faces: architect Peter Marino, for example, who went from regulation suits to full-on biker leather about 12 years ago, and interior designer Nicky Haslam, who, during middle age, abandoned tweed for hair dyed not unlike Joan Jett's.

One female fashion editor I know was famous for wearing Ungaro (with all the ruches, frills and colour that implies). But after her divorce she started wearing leather leggings and lots of black eyeliner, and was generally regarded by the male population as totally hot. Who wouldn't want those adjectives attached to themselves?

Besides, whatever Pellat-Finet says, the age of the person wearing the clothes does make a difference: what looks like rebellion on a teenager seems like armour on a grown woman. You can wear leather because you have earned it. The clothes that are part of the current fashion moment are for women who don't really suffer fools. They can't; they have to get to the supermarket the board meeting, or whatever is next on the agenda. It's highly efficient to have all this . . . efficiency conveyed by dress. Or is that wishful thinking?

When it comes to this sort of fashion, as with everything else in a woman's life, you can have it all - but not at the same time. Get the Tao motorcycle boots with the ropes and ropes of studs, but don't wear them with the leather trousers; wear them with the flowing dress, the way retailer Ikram Goldman did during the Paris Tiffany Keys (the time spent waiting around for fashion shows to start is time best spent gathering wardrobe intelligence). Wear a Rick Owens jacket with, well, anything except more leather. That's just asking for fetish jokes.

At a recent dinner one guest was wearing hers with a super-girly Alice Temperley dress, and it looked great. If you want to wear leather leggings, pair them with one of Dries van Noten's terrific patchwork jackets or Celine's starched man's white shirts or Malo's thick ribbed jumpers.

Punk was a visual and aural rebellion against the establishment, and once the establishment has co-opted the accoutrements of the genre, then to break them down and use them as you see fit is the mature version of a counter-revolt. That's what I tell myself anyway. Though I am not sure that Ms Jett, who appeared at the premiere of The Runaways in midriff-baring leather vest, leather trousers, and heavy black eyeliner, would see it like that.

Vanessa Friedman is the FT's fashion editor. She interviews Rick Owens in this week's How to Spend It magazine

89 Women Celebrate Mardi Gras with Mammograms

06:57, 2010-Mar-22 .. 0 comments .. Link

The famous beads were handed out left and right, but it was for a much more important Tiffany Key Rings than for what the day is typically known. The Breast Cancer Partnership of Tacoma gave new meaning to the usual Mardi Gras celebration when 89 underserved and uninsured women were given access to mammograms on Feb. 16 at the Carol Milgard Breast Center. For many, all ranging in age from 40 to 64, this was their first opportunity for a mammogram, due to a lack of health care coverage (see also Carol Milgard Breast Center).

In a fun and non-threatening atmosphere these women -- who otherwise would not have access to this critical component in their own health -- received mammograms, important breast health education and pampering spa treatments.

"It's vital that we keep the importance of breast health awareness at the forefront of women's Frank Gehry throughout the year, not just during one particular month," says Marcy Parsons, clinical operations director of the Carol Milgard Breast Center. "Given the response we had for this particular event, especially during a month that doesn't have an emphasis on breast health and prevention, it speaks volumes to both the success of the event and to the need for preventative health services within the underserved populations of our community."

This is the second such event held at the center in the past four months; last October over 60 women were assisted by the collaborative efforts of the Breast Cancer Partnership of Tacoma.

"This event brings to life the mission of the Carol Milgard Breast Center, which is providing breast health exams for all, regardless of their financial status," adds Parsons. "We thank each of the members of the Breast Cancer Partnership of Tacoma for their commitment to these women."

The Carol Milgard Breast Center is a collaboration between MultiCare Health System and the Elsa Peretti Health System. It is managed by TRA Medical Imaging.

The Breast Cancer Partnership of Tacoma founding members include the Carol Milgard Breast Center; Franciscan Health System; MultiCare Health System; Breast Cancer Resource Center; Breast and Cervical Health Program of Pierce County; Korean Women's Association; American Cancer Society of Pierce County; and Puget Sound Susan G. UConn Women Focused On Ultimate Goal

06:55, 2010-Mar-22 .. 0 comments .. Link

They have marched through the snow of a long winter undefeated, basically Tiffany Earrings and universally anointed as the best, perhaps the best ever.

And yet, the bounty means nothing more now than a sweep through the Big East, the nation's top ranking and an NCAA Division I record 72-game winning streak for the UConn women.

For most programs, that would be enough to savor, but not for the Huskies. Their spring awakening comes today at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on the campus of Old Dominion. It's a new day and a new time.

No.1 UConn (33-0) plays 16th-seeded Southern (23-8) in the first round of the Norfolk subregional.

"The way I look at games like this is that the other team is spending their time trying to Tiffany Necklaces out a way to beat us," Geno Auriemma said. "If I'm right, if I've guessed right, then we'll be ready for it. If I'm not right, then we'll have to improvise on the fly. I don't look at it as if they don't have a chance to beat us. If they don't think they can beat us, it doesn't matter what they do. They are going to lose."

The Jaguars, champions of the SWAC, understand the task is enormous. They can sense those around them sensing doom for a program ranked 190th in the RPI. Until today, Alabama State was its big game.

"These kids have never been to the tournament before, so I am excited for them," Jags coach Sandy Pugh said. "I know they are a little nervous, as well as excited; you are playing the No.1 team, a team on an incredible run that's been incredible for women's basketball. It should be a tough game for us, but we'll do what we have to do."

What the Jaguars need to do is complex. They have to develop a strategy to stop a team with two first-team All-Americans, Tina Charles and Maya Moore. They need to figure out how an offense averaging only 59.5 points can stay with the Huskies, who average 81.5.

But mostly, they have to believe it is even possible. UConn's last five first-round Tiffany Rings have lost by an average of 40.2 points.

"There is always a way to beat a team," Southern junior guard Hannah Kador said.

"It's going to be a good experience for [UConn], too," junior Freda Allen said, "because we intend to play hard."

The Huskies begin the tournament well rested; they haven't played since winning the Big East championship game March 9.

They have solved every mystery thrown their way from the small-and-athletic, to the big-and-Tiffany Money Clips opponents and have managed to beat each by double figures.

"I don't think we're a better team than we were last year," UConn's Kalana Greene said. "But this team has different goals than last year's team did. You can look back; you can't look forward. You have to stay in the moment,

"But if our guards perform better than the guards on the other team, then we'll be fine. And our guards have done it all year. They have brought everything the team has needed, and I am not expecting anything different now."

The Huskies have become well acquainted with playing huge underdogs.

"I'm not sure what it must feel like for [Southern]," UConn guard Caroline Doty said. "I'm sure Tiffany Cuff Links team we play is looking for the upset in the NCAA Tournament. So that excites them. They are a quick, athletic team, and they aren't going to back down.

"But if I was playing for them, I would get a good night's sleep, eat right and go as hard as you can because you know that you can be gone after one game."

Gay-marriage advocates in N.J. resume legal fight

Advocates for gay and lesbian couples are headed back to New Jersey's tiffany cufflinks Court to resume their attempt to legalize same-sex marriage.

Lambda Legal, a gay-rights legal group, filed a motion to the high court Thursday seeking a ruling that would let same-sex couples wed.

The filing argues that the state has failed to comply with a 2006 ruling that said committed gay and lesbian couples should be provided the same rights as heterosexual husbands and wives.

"We come back to the court to turn equal rights on paper to equal rights in the real," said Hayley Gorenberg, Lambda Legal's deputy legal director. "We're asking the court to enforce its order -- to give equality, which must be marriage."

The return to the Supreme Court marks the latest step in a legal fight that opened in 2002, when seven tiffanys and lesbian couples sued the state for the right to marry. The motion comes two months after the New Jersey Senate rejected a bill to allow same-sex marriage.

Some who oppose same-sex marriage say the issue should be decided in a public vote, not the courts.

"The people should be able to decide the definition of marriage," said John Tomicki, president of the New Jersey Coalition to Preserve and Protect Marriage.

Tomicki said a ruling allowing same-sex marriage could open the door to polygamy or adults marrying minors.

Gorenberg said the case dealt only with marriage between two adults.

In a 2006 ruling, the state Supreme Court said same-sex couples deserve the tiffany pendants rights as heterosexual couples, but in a 4-3 decision it stopped short of legalizing same-sex marriage. The majority ordered the Legislature to provide equal rights, either through marriage or some other means.

Lawmakers and then-Gov. Jon S. Corzine opted for civil unions, which gay-rights groups say do not provide the same rights as marriage. Gays and lesbians say they have been confronted by emergency room staffs, especially in other states, who are unfamiliar with the rule and have denied them access to their sick partners. They say some employers refuse to extend health benefits to a partner in a civil union.

Gorenberg said those examples, and others, show that the order for equal rights has not been followed.

Gov. Christie has said he opposes same-sex marriage. His office declined to tiffany earrings on the motion.

Germany presses UK on hedge fund regulation

Merkel presses for concerted action ; Brown told bonus tax is not enough

Angela Merkel challenged Gordon Brown yesterday to drop his objections to tiffany bracelets regulation of the hedge fund and private equity industry.

The German chancellor called for greater progress in agreeing new financial regulations at an international level, and singled out UK opposition to the proposed European Union hedge fund directive.

"I work well with Gordon Brown," she told the Bundestag. "But his once-off tax on [bankers'] bonuses is only half as good an idea as the hedge fund rules we are considering, and which Great Britain ought to approve. That is what we must fight for, and I am expecting some support."

Finance ministers delayed a decision on hedge fund legislation on Tuesday after Mr Brown, the UK prime minister, pleaded that the issue be shelved until after the general election.

Ms Merkel said there was no point in Germany seeking to go it alone in drafting national regulations for banking supervision, and for winding down and restructuring banks in difficulty, without wider deals both in the Group of 20 and at the EU level.

"I want to remind you that something happened [in the financial markets]. It makes no sense to keep behaving as if nothing had happened." The euro, she said, was facing the "strongest challenge it has ever had" in the wake of the Greek debt crisis.

Speculators had made matters worse but the problem was the result of many years of tiffany cufflinks violation of the rules of the eurozone stability and growth pact.

"A swift act of solidarity [with Greece] is not the right answer," she said. "There is no alternative to the Greek savings programme, and further efforts in the coming years."

The chancellor, who was speaking in the annual budget debate, admitted her government faced a "Herculean task" to manage its economy, seeking to boost growth and bring state spending back under control simultaneously.

She rejected criticism of Germany's export-led growth model. "Where we are strong, we will not give up our strengths just because more of our exports are bought than those of other countries," she said.

"That would be the wrong European answer to [the challenge to boost] our continent's competitiveness."

Ms Merkel defended her centre-right coalition against strong attacks from the opposition, and backed the savings programme of Wolfgang Schauble , finance minister.

The highest net borrowing requirement of any postwar German government - EUR80bn ($110bn, pound(s)72bn) of a EUR320bn budget for 2010 - was necessary to revive growth, she said. But "difficult savings measures" were also needed to return to a balanced budget.

In an outspoken attack, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, parliamentary leader of the tiffanys Social Democrats, said Germany had not been so badly governed for decades. "This. . . coalition has not a single convincing common project," he told the chancellor. "You are facing the ruins of a wrecked marriage. Anyone can see that."

Ms Merkel said "new thinking" was needed to meet the scale of the task, and promised tax cuts.

Economists say consumers are reluctant to spend extra cash when they see the government borrowing.

Pumping fashion show goes from street to ballroom

05:44, 2010-Mar-17 .. 0 comments .. Link

MELBOURNE, March 15 AAP - Jennifer Hawkins played fashion's grand conductor with the Melbourne tiffany cufflinks Orchestra and a 500-plus cast and crew for the launch of Myer's autumn-winter 2010 collection at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

Opening the massive fashion jamboree in a gold-embellished Toni Maticevski dress, Hawkins said headlining the event demanded "getting into character, and when the music kicks in pumping you go with the adrenaline ...

"I love doing the parade, dressing up and being a bit different. It means you can be different personalities!"

Channelling 1980s meets 1940s fashion, Hawkins wore bold creations by local designers including a hot red dress by Charlie Brown and outfits by Bettina Liano and Manning Cartell, with a final elegant appearance in Matthew Eager.

There was a moment for reflection, however, when a brigade of models strutted out in UK designer Alexander McQueen's Diffusion line in tribute to the 40-year-old who died in February.

Hawkins said controversy - from McQueen's suicide to Elle Macpherson's recent catwalk comeback at Paris tiffany money clips Week - was becoming a major part of the modern fashion game.

"You definitely have to know what is going on behind the scenes of what you are doing if you want to have longevity. I like to think I'm in control but not a control freak."

Former Victorian premier Steve Bracks' son Nick made his debut as a model, strutting the stage in designers Ben Sherman and Politix, while Packed to the Rafters star Hugh Sheridan also charmed the crowds in local fashions.

Stand-out designs at Monday's shows included cuffed ankle boots by Arabella Ramsay and silver dresses by Jayson Brunsdon.

The season's fashion is set to go in all directions - from street to ballroom with rock chic in between but sky-high tiffany pendants stiletto boot heels were common to most women's labels.

The dramatic resurgence of the shoulder pad balances out some deconstructed shapes and wild prints that are making their mark.

Military jackets, Grecian draping and sparkly metallic panelling all featured in the first evening of shows, which included a runway event at the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival Docklands headquarters.

The festival runs until March 21.

Old Navy Peddle Spring Fashions Amid Bone-Chilling Weather

05:49, 2010-Mar-15 .. 0 comments .. Link

The snowstorms that blanketed much of the country in the past week caught apparel cufflinks in short-sleeves.

Most clothing chains have very little winter clothing left on their racks, the result of tightly managed inventories and better-than-expected holiday sales.

But with nearly 70% of the country covered in snow, store shelves are mismatched to the weather: filled with new spring fashions that frigid customers aren't in the mood to buy. The lack of appropriate dress could cost retailers some momentum after improved holiday and January sales periods, said analysts.

The Children's Place Retail Stores Inc. this week featured brightly colored polo shirts in its store windows, including a Manhattan location that closed its doors early Wednesday because of blizzard-like conditions. "We use our windows to highlight our latest fashions," explained a spokeswoman. Kohl's Corp.'s advertising for snow-earrings Silver Spring, Md., touts a President's Day weekend sale on flip-flops and children's swimsuits. Gap Inc.'s Old Navy stores currently hawks $2 lace-trimmed camisoles as "Item of the Week."

"The chances of shoppers buying a tank top or some shorts when it's 20 degrees and a foot of snow is much less likely" than in warmer weather, said Paul Lejuez, a senior retail analyst with brokers Credit Suisse.

An employee at a Gap store in downtown Washington, D.C., said the store had been sold out of cold-weather hats, scarves and gloves for over a month. A company spokeswoman confirmed that those items have been out of stores since the holidays. Gap stores and its sister-outlets Banana Republic still have "a good balance" of long-sleeved sweaters and long-sleeved T-shirts in stock, the spokeswoman said. "The weather is the hardest thing to predict," she said.

Even before this week's storms, February had brought a cumulative 939 inches of snow to 260 major cities necklaces the country, the most in 35 years, said Bill Kirk, chief executive of Weather Trends International, a forecasting firm with retail clients. Last year, the totals were only 224 inches.

In addition to dealing with the snow, which hit the East Coast as well as much of the Midwest, much of the country is hunkered down against severe cold. This is the second-coldest week prior to President's Day in 20 years, said Mr. Kirk. Last year, it was the second warmest.

Many retailers report their fiscal fourth quarter earnings in late February and early March and often given guidance based on the current trends, said Ann Poole, a retail analyst with Stephens Inc.

"A weak February sales trend could result in retailers introducing a more conservative forward outlook than the Street is expecting," she says.

The weather won't kill spring merchandise sales altogether, experts say, because February is the smallest sales month in many retailers' fiscal first-quarters, which typically end in April. Valentine's Day sales, which are centered on jewelry and intimate apparel, aren't affected by climate as long as shoppers can get to the stores, said Kimberly Greenberger, an analyst with Citigroup Inc.

Some retailers are stocking more wear-now merchandise than usual, as shoppers have been putting off purchases until the last minute.

Macy's Inc. said its My Macy's merchandise localization program, which lets buyers modify merchandise assortments based on local needs, helped it avoid shortages. A spokesman said Thursday that the department store chain planned for fresh flows of coats, gloves and hats in February and March in cold-weather markets. "Macy's tiffanys to have ample supplies of cold-weather merchandise," the spokesman said.
