As the fish is long and big, he has to lash it to the boat. On the return to the port, smell of blood of the big fish drew the attack of the sharks one after another. Then, he used all means he could use to fight back. The gig was brought away by the shark, and he tried to tie small knives to stab the sharks. The knife is broken and then he uses a stick. The stick is lost too and he uses his mast. Although the marlin's entire carcass is eaten by sharks, nothing can destroy his spirit. Heaven seemed to have had pity for such a great old man; he dropped misfortunes on this old man again and again and eventually his indomitable will did not got good results with only the fish head, tail and a spine left when he returned to the harbor.

Why didn't Hemingway let the old man win at last? Can this not more reflect the hero's greatness? The old man's story symbolizes not only the relationship between man and nature, but also the indestructible spirit of the whole mankind. He is defeated in reality but triumphs in spirit because his persistence in the fight shows the nobleness and dignity of mankind. In people's life in all of the world, who do not suffer failure? the reason for failure maybe different, but in any case, you can not afford the failure. I believe that it is the living environment full of dangers and the tough attitudes towards life that make this book attract more and more readers. The old man in the story says: [But a man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated." So what matters is not the idea of victory but the life value of a man. The old man is brave to challenge his limits and overtake it over and over again, which are admired by us. He shows us a confident and strong spiritual strength.

The failure is to pluck up our courage to pick ourselves up after falling, pick ourselves up again after another fall, never lose our hope for life and never love our life dreams.
